Teenage suspect identified in Mayfield murder case

A teenager accused of murdering a senior advisor to the former chancellor George Osbourne has been named in court.

Ben Bamford, 18, of Crowborough, entered a not guilty plea when he appeared via videolink at the Old Bailey on Friday (July 29) charged with the murder of 52-year-old Paul Jeffries on Febuary 2.

Before Friday’s hearing, Mr Bamford had not been identified as he was only 17-years-old when charged with the alleged offence. The legal restrictions were lifted by a judge at the Old Bailey after Mr Bamford turned 18 earlier this month.He is expected to face trial at Lewes Crown Court later this year.

A senior tax advisor at HMRC, Mr Jefferies was found dead in his home in Coggins Mill Lane on February 25 after colleagues raised concerns he had not been seen for a several days.
