Swimmer found dead in sea

AN ELDERLY man has died after going for an afternoon dip in the sea at Middleton.

The 74-year-old was airlifted to hospital in Portsmouth after the Solent coastguard went to his rescue.

The man's partner became concerned that he had been swimming for an hour and couldn't be seen.

She rang the emergency services at 5.30pm yesterday (Wednesday) and a helicopter, shore team and lifeboat sped to the area.

A member of the helicopter crew saw the man floating face down in the water.

The lifeboat then pulled him out and moved him clear of some nearby rocks.

He was winched into the helicopter and given emergency treatment while being airlifted to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham.

However, the man was later pronounced dead by doctors at the hospital.
