Stuntman and buggy race to look forward to at Town Show and Family Day

IT'S being billed as bigger and better than ever, and Saturday's Littlehampton Town Show and Family Day will even witness a new world record if one man has his way.

Professional stuntman Terry Cole, holder of more world records than anyone else, will be attempting to set a new one by lying on a bed of broken glass and having 50 paving stones and 50 building blocks lowered onto more broken glass on top of his body.

He will also be performing other terrifying stunts to entertain the crowds at Rosemead Open Space, where a packed programme of activities has been lined up, including music, dance, arts, crafts and sport.

This is the fourth year that the town council's Family Day has been staged alongside the Town Show, which will again be staged in a large marquee, in which superb blooms, vegetables, fruit, baking, preserves, handicrafts, photographs and other items will be on display.

There will also be a community marquee in which a wide range of local organisations will be raising awareness of their valuable work in the Littlehampton area. Littlehampton Museum will also have a local history display and the town council will exhibit photographs of the winning gardens in its gardens and allotments competition.

Events in the arena include a pet show (see separate story), police dog display, fire and rescue service display, tag rugby and dancing, while the town council's inflatable bandstand will stage performances by the Miller's Men jazz band, the Golden Boulders, a rock band made up of 11-year-olds, and music and dance sessions led by Suzy Mills.

For the more active youngsters, there will be a climbing-wall challenge, and younger children can enjoy tumbling about on bouncy castles, or be creative in the Bognor Fun Bus. Littlehampton Lions' Club will be providing refreshments throughout the afternoon.

One lucky person could even leave the event with the keys to a brand new Ford Ka, if they throw seven sixes with dice.

Town council community resources committee chairman, councillor John Singleton, said this year's event had been shaped by comments from people attending in 2004.

"We have listened to the feedback we got after last year's show, and have produced an amazing variety of events to please all the family."

The fun starts at 1pm and continues to 5pm.

Littlehampton town mayor David Dyball and Arun District Council chairman Tony Squires will go head-to-head in a buggy burn-up challenge on the day.

The civic leaders will launch a competition to complete the fastest lap on a figure-of-eight course, racing buggies supplied by Littlehampton Shopmobility.

Visitors to the event will also be encouraged to have a go, with a cup and a John Cooper cap awarded to the fastest contestant.
