Student wins biology gold award

A Year 13 pupil at Christ's Hospital has been awarded a gold medal in the British Biology Olympiad and will be attending an awards ceremony with other medal winners at the Royal Institution in London on Thursday July 7.

The award has placed Samson Charles, 17, from Chichester, in the top 6.6% of the 7200 students who took part nationally.

Samson, who has won the academic prize for Biology for the past two years at Christ’s Hospital said: “I have always enjoyed and been fascinated by Biology, and try to learn as much as I can about it.

“It was such a surprise to find out that I’d got the gold medal in the British Biology Olympiad as the paper was so hard, and being the first person from CH to achieve this felt great.

“Knowing that I’d got the prize was a brilliant affirmation that all of my hard work in Biology has paid off, and I am now totally sure that this is a subject that I want to continue studying when I leave school.”

Currently studying A level Biology, Chemistry and Archaeology at Christ’s Hospital, Samson hopes to go to the university of Bath to study Biochemistry in the autumn.

The British Biology Olympiad is a national competition for A level and IB pupils run by the Royal Society of Biology.

Pupils from Christ’s Hospital were put forward for the competition and did very well indeed winning one silver, eight bronze medals and a further 14 pupils were either commended or highly commended.
