Student selected to attend physics event in Oxford

Adam Dillamore has been selected to attend a Physics Masterclass at St Johns College, Oxford on Friday July 8 as a result of his gold award success in the British Physics Olympiad AS Challenge Competition.

The Department of Physics and St John’s College, Oxford are hosting this event, which is the first British Physics Olympiad Masterclass for Year 12 students who have achieved a Gold Award in the AS Challenge.

Steyning Grammar School Science teacher Helen Bloomer said: “This is very exciting as only the top AS Physics Students from across the UK have been invited.

“As a department we are very proud of Adam who has always taken every opportunity to further his education in Physics.

“Steyning Science department has a strong history of enabling students to achieve at the very highest level and as a result many of our students choose to continue their education in the sciences at prestigious universities. “

The Physics Masterclass includes an overnight stay and dinner at St John’s College on the Friday evening.

There is a full study day which is designed to develop students’ skills for physics problem solving using mathematical techniques to analyse, as well as some and hands on experiments.

There will also be a range of academic lectures and talks on careers in physics.

Students will also get the opportunity to meet with other top AS physics students from across the UK and get to experience life as a University of Oxford undergraduate student.

Steyning Grammar School Headteacher Mr Nick Wergan said: “This comes as no surprise to us – Adam has always impressed us with his zest for Physics.

“He is a great role model for our school, showing a passion for his studies that will take him very far. He did so well in the Physics Olympiad and deserves a great experience at Oxford.”
