Storrington dad admits police assault

Marc Trott, 22, of the Hormare estate, Storrington, was given a 12-month community order at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (July 28).

“It’s a matter of great regret that he appears before you today,” said his defence counsel Gillian Bell.

“Had he considered the situation in a better way perhaps he wouldn’t have any matters pending before the court.”

Magistrates heard police were called to Trott’s Storrington home on July 10 for what was described in court as an ‘unrelated matter’.

Prosecutor Jane Deakin said: “As a result the defendant was arrested and locked in handcuffs and the defendant has then become non-compliant.”

She went on to say Trott told PC Oliver Pullen: “I’ll show you an assault police constable,” before headbutting him in the face, injuring PC Pullen’s top lip.

Trott was then arrested for the assault and taken into custody.

“Given that the defendant accepts he caused the injuries the police officer sustained I’m not going to take issue with the whys and wherefores of how that issue came about,” said Miss Deakin.

The court heard Trott had received treatment previously for anger management issues and had been in trouble for similar reasons before, although the most recent incident had been some time ago.

The incident to which the police were initially called was not taken any further.

“He accepts his behaviour was not acceptable and not something a police officer should have to deal with in the course of his duty,” said Ms Bell.

The court heard Trott was currently in receipt of ESA (employment and support allowance) and so unable to carry out any unpaid work.

Magistrates said the seriousness of the crime meant more than just a fine was required.

“We find the offence so serious as to warrant a community-based penalty,” said chairman of the bench David Harmston.

A 12-month community order was imposed with a requirement of attending 35 days of a rehabilitation activity requirement.

He was also fined a total of £445, made up of a £100 fine, £50 compensation to PC Pullen, £85 costs, a £60 victim surcharge as well as the newly-introduced £150 criminal court chage.

“Keep out of trouble from now on,” Mr Harmston warned Trott as he left the dock.
