Stationary business isn't standing still

"LOCAL businesses can succeed even in the pit of this recession," said Greg Barker, at the offical opening of SBS Consumables' new store last Friday.

In a busy week for the MP, Mr Barker was helped in the duty by children's favourite Charlie the Clown.

350 was raised on the day through ink cartridges being recycled. The money will be donated to Emily Lawes, the paraplegic horserider from Bexhill who is hoping to represent England in the Para Olympics 2012.

Ten years ago SBS Consumables, or Select Business Supplies, operated from a small office in the De La Warr Mews.

Through hard work and friendly service, owner Keith Geraghty expanded to Buckhurst Place in 2006.

In March this year, the businesss moved into new premises in Town Hall Square on London Road.

The shop sells stationery, office goods and computer consumables.

Greg Barker MP said: Congratulations to SBS. This is fantastic. A shop opening in the middle of the recession. The life blood of Bexhill is our small businesses. The more of our local businesses we can support and encourage to follow suit the better."

Keith said: "The last few months have been good. It helped that we picked up from Mr Pickwicks, which used to be in Town Hall Square, plus we're more visible where we are. Footfall is better."

Cllr Joy Hughes, Rother District Councillor for Bexhill Central ward, said: "I'm happy to see these new premises are much larger and better and I hope Keith does very well. I take a keen interest in my ward and would encourage people to realise that we've got to use our local shops."

Bexhill's other stationary shop, George Blackman, has also recently moved to a new premises on Sackville Road, just a few doors down from its old building.

The shop, a family run business which supplies and repairs business equipment, is now located next to the Observer offices.
