Stars wheel in for charity bike ride

CYCLING from Bexhill to Paris may not be everybody's idea of how to spend a Saturday but 60 intrepid riders were determined to test their pedal power at the weekend.

They finished their journey without leaving Devonshire Square in a sponsored 'virtual' event which raised more than 2,000 for Bexhill Caring Community.

Businesses and organisations entered the spirit of Bexercycle 2010 as riders clocked up a total of 260 miles on exercise bikes provided by Bexhill Leisure Centre.

Cycling experts Bexhill Wheelers turned out in force and the local Liberal Democrats took a break from electioneering to have a go.

Banks, estate agents and the fire and rescue service were also represented.

Entrants from 18 to 75 took to the saddle as marquees, bunting, balloons and music filled the square to the delight of the Bank Holiday crowds.

Only Fools and Horses star Gwyneth Strong was joined by fellow tv actors Jesse Birdsall and Russell Lloyd joined in the fun and town mayor Cllr Bridget George sampled the atmosphere.

Caring Community manager Margaret von Speyr and chief organiser Steve Gaines were delighted by the public response.

Margaret said: "I am absolutely thrilled with the success of the fund-raising event and would like to thank everyone who rode a bike, helped to stage the event and the celebrities and supporters who came along to cheer us on.

"Thanks also to Bexhill Lions, Hospital Radio, St Mary Magdalene's School, St John Ambulance, Woosters, Prime Care Trust, The Devonshire, Rother District Council and all the volunteers who helped with the organisation on the day. Brian Storkey for his radio broadcast, Dyamond Dance, Freedom Leisure for the hire of the bikes and Custard Design of Eastbourne for the maps. We look forward to staging the event again next year."

Proceeds go towards the cost of a newly opened meeting room attached to the Caring Community's office in Sackville Road.
