Smudger’s Legacy was set up in November 2007 following the death, in a motorbike accident, of Steve Smith, who was only 37 years old.

Steve left a young widow and three children under the age of seven.

The following March over 70 runners took part in the local Hastings Half Marathon and raised in excess of £17,000 which was distributed between his young family, Kent Air Ambulance and the Conquest Hospital’s cancer unit.

Every year, since July 2008, a Charity Golf Day has been held at Sedlescombe Golf Club, where a member of Steve’s family nominates a charity to donate the monies raised. More than 80 players took part in this year’s Golf Day.

The money raised will be shared between three local charities – St Michael’s Hospice, Charity for Kids and Dragon Flies, a local children’s bereavement charity.

Sreve’s brother Darren said: “This is the most we have raised. We would like to thank the 18 local businesses that have sponsored a hole and also to Barclays and Lloyds Bank for matching the money we raised up to £1,000. “
