Shelagh marks 105th birthday

Friends and fellow residents at a care home organised a party for a pensioner to mark her 105th birthday.

Shelagh Lloyd, who has lived through both World Wars and was born four years after the death of Queen Victoria, received a card from the Queen and Iain Duncan Smith, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, at her birthday bash.

The pensioner, who lives at Healey House in Upper Maze Hill, St Leonards, was born in Wales on August 19, 1905 and worked as a midwife all through her working life.

The world of 1905 was very much different than today.

The first Russian Revolution took place in January of that year as people revolted against the Tsar following heavy losses in the Russo-Japanese War.

Edward VII was on the throne in the UK and Theodore Roosevelt became US president in March that year.

Just two months after Shelagh was born, the Wright brothers' third aeroplane also stayed in the air for 39 minutes with Wilbur piloting.

Shelagh has a 103-year-old brother called Geoffrey, who lives in Wales and has three nieces.

She used to live in Rock-a-Nore Road before moving to Healey House 10 years ago.
