Scout HQ can be demolished

COUNCILLORS ignored planners' advice and approved a controversial bid to demolish a Seaford scout hut.

Lewes District Council's planning committee on Wednesday allowed the Seahaven District Scout Council to knock down its Chichester Road HQ and build three four-bedroom houses.

The plans have sparked outrage among some scouting members and townsfolk who submitted a 1,685 signature petition calling for it to be saved. Neighbours have also complained the site is too small to take three new homes.

However, the scout council says the hut, which was built in the 1920s, is in a poor condition and would cost too much to bring up to modern standards. The building is no longer used by scouts but is home to a playgroup and dance club.

Planning officers recommended the bid be rejected. They said it had not been proved there were other facilities to compensate for its loss. They were also concerned that one of the new houses would overshadow its neighbour. However, councillors voted 5-3 to grant permission with the proviso that the new houses were repositioned.
