Rose Green school hosts Fairtrade breakfast

Children at Rose Green Infant School enjoyed a Fairtrade Breakfast earlier this month.

After the huge success of last year’s Fairtrade breakfast, the school decided to hold another one during this year’s ‘Fairtrade Fortnight’.

Nearly 100 children, aged between four and seven, took part in the breakfast on Monday, March 6.

The breakfast consisted of Fairtrade apple juice or orange juice, Fairtrade grapes and bananas, Fairtrade Geo bars and sandwiches with Fairtrade jam, honey or chocolate spread.

It helped the children to think about where their food comes from and about the farmers who actually grow crops around the world.

In assemblies the children have been learning about what ‘Fairtrade’ really means and have been watching films showing banana, sugar cane and cotton farmers.

They have been thinking about what it means to these farmers to get a fair price for the crops they grow enabling them to provide for their families.

The children have been looking out for the Fairtrade symbol at home and in the shops and bringing in a wide variety of packaging to share.

Several schoolchildren had comments about Fairtrade fortnight.

James said: “They grow the sugar canes and if it is Fairtrade they get a fair amount of money to help look after their families.”

Zoe said “The people that made it got a fair price, while Aisla added “The food in the shops doesn’t just come from this country it comes from all over the world.”

Rose Green Infant School wish to extend a big thank you to the local Co-op in Rose Green who donated the bread, butter, jam, chocolate spread, grapes and bananas.
