Residents welcome large store concept

Residents who spoke to the Observer at Friday's open day of the exhibition welcomed the prospect of Asda in the town.

Michael Picknell (65), of The Hartings, Felpham, said: 'I am quite happy to see them here in principle.

'We are going to need more supermarkets because of the amount of housing they are building around here.

'There is really only one supermarket in the town centre and I can't see that really being affected too much by Asda.

'The effect on the other shops depends on what exactly they are going to have in the store.'

Aldwick resident Derek Bech (76), of Canons Close, stated: 'They are interesting plans because we need a second major store to give some competition for Tesco.

'I don't think Asda will make any difference to the town centre. People go to those local shops because they like the personal service and the items they sell.'

He said the planned development made previous plans for a Shripney railway station more sensible.

'That must follow all this development on that site,' he stated.

Marion Groombridge (60), of Clarence Road, said: 'Having Asda here is a good idea and it would be nice to have a business park.

'It will create a lot of new jobs for the area.

'It won't make much difference to the shops in Bognor.

'They survive with Tesco and Morrisons and there is no shortage of people shopping there. It can certainly get quite busy on Saturday afternoons.'
