Reclaiming CDs

'BOX IT, Don't Bin It' says the Beacon Press, an East Sussex printing company. Beacon has launched a campaign to reduce Britain's growing CD mountain.

Billions of CDs, which are not bio-degradable, are produced each year, and huge numbers are dumped in landfill sites.

These CDs could be successfully recycled, advises Beacon chairman Mark Fairbrass. He has written to all neighbouring businesses on the Bellbrook Park Estate in Uckfield, and to many customers, asking them to participate in the CD recycling scheme.

They have been asked to place specially designed collection boxes in their offices and to encourage staff to put unwanted CDs and cases in these boxes. Beacon will collect the filled boxes and send them to a specialist recycling company.

Here, all the CDs will be reused in the manufacture of artificial wood, alarm boxes, lighting lenses, cardboard, equipment cases and CD cases. Sixteen companies have already signed up to take part.

The Beacon Press was recently voted one of the Greenest companies in the country. Mr Fairbrass said: 'As a company known for its environmental awareness we are always looking for new ways to help the environment, so we're starting this campaign as part of our community sponsorship programme.'
