Ray clinches big jump in fund raising

A cancer survivor from Felpham has raised nearly £2,000 to help future patients.

Ray Blackwell has handed over 1,875.18 towards the new cancer day unit in Chichester. Gift aid will add a further 105 to the amount. There is still time for the amount to climb further and double his original target.

His internet page for donations www.justgiving.com/rayblackwell will stay open until the end of August.

Ray presented his donation to nurses Julie Dawson, Angela Collis and Louise Hay who work on St Richard's Hospital's Ford ward and will transfer to the unit '“ Fernhurst Centre '“ when it opens early next year.

Also present was Lesley-Anne Lloyd, the head of fundraising at St Richard's Hospital Charitable Trust.

Lesley-Anne said: "The charitable trust and the ward staff are all absolutely thrilled with the passion with which Ray has raised money for the cancer day unit and cannot thank him enough for his fundraising efforts. He is an absolute star.

"The money Ray has raised will go directly to helping other people living with cancer in this area."

Former flooring company owner Ray leaped 13,000ft from a plane above Netheravon in Wiltshire recently to celebrate his 70th birthday. He wanted to do something outrageous to mark his personal milestone and his successful treatment for prostate cancer.

Ray, of Downview Road, was diagnosed with the cancer in 2003. His treatment at St Richard's went well and he is in remission.
