These results take East Sussex schools to above the national standards for these subjects.

However, English results showed a fall from 73 per cent achieving Level 5 in 2005 to 70 per cent this year.

Cllr, Rupert Simmons, cabinet member for learning at East Sussex County Council, said: 'This is an important age for young people as they prepare for GCSEs and choices about their future.

'It is good to see so much improvement.'

Schools that achieved exceptionally good results, with more than 80 per cent of students reaching level 5 or above in all three subject, included Claverham Community College, Battle; Heathfield Community College; Uckfield Community Technology College; Uplands Community Technology College, Wadhurst, and Chailey School.

Schools that showed significant improvement included Tideway School, Newhaven.
