Long-time Heathfield councillor stands down

A long-serving Heatfield councillor has decided to stand down due to medical reasons.

Roger Thomas, who represents Heathfield South on Wealden District Council, is also relinquishing his position on Heathfield and Waldron Parish Council.

He served on the county council from 1997 to 2013 and on Wealden since 2015.

He said: “I have had a good innings. However due to medical reasons, I think now is the right time to stand down.

“I’ve enjoyed meeting many local people over the years, and helping them with their problems. I am now 79, so it is probably time someone younger lent a hand.”

Bob Standley, leader at Wealden District Council, thanked Cllr Thomas for his service and wished him all the best for the future.

He said: “Councillor Thomas has been an effective and dedicated councillor over the years, and we will miss his contribution to the council.”

Council by-elections have been postponed until 2021 because of Covid-19 so the seat will remain vacant until then.
