Cllr Morley decided against it and so the council voted unanimously for cllr Lintott who had some kind words for the out-going chair.

Cllr Lintott said: “She said: “I would like to say thank you to Mark on behalf of all of us, for the years you have been the chairman of the council.

“It is never an easy task.

“Please know that what you have done is very much appreciated.

“We are pleased you are going to remain a councillor and we can continue to benefit.

“Thank you Mark for your continued service to Midhurst.”

Cllr Purves said: “This is the last time.

“Four years has passed and I have taken a decision to stand down and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank those who have supported me.

“When I took over it was always going to be difficult challenge but it would not have been possible without the support.

“It’s been an incredible privilege — quite a job — but a huge privilege.”

He said that it is ‘the right time’ to handover his title as chairman and said he is ‘delighted’ that cllr Lintott would be taking on the role.#
