Collyer’s hosts hustings for Horsham general election candidates

Representatives from parties took part in a lively debate, chaired by Natasha Kingdon, who is a student at Collyer’s.

The candidates present were Roger Arthur (UKIP), Martyn Davis (Labour), Jim Duggan (Peace Party), Darrin Green (Green Party), Morwen Millson (Lib Dems), Jeremy Quin (Conservatives), and James Smith (Something New).

First year student, Stella Skenderova said: “I think it was very interesting and really useful, particularly for those students who don’t study politics and needed more information.”

Key issues discussed in depth were: education, equal pay, immigration, housing problems and tax and welfare. Other areas covered included reducing the national debt, equality for all, and bringing the voting age down to 16.

George Lear, Subject Leader for Government and Politics at Collyer’s was delighted: “It was a fantastic debate and the students who took part asked complex questions.”

Natasha Kingdon, who is studying A2 Government and Politics as part of her second year at Collyer’s said: “I think it was absolutely great and very engaging for students. Thank-you so much to the candidates and students for coming.”

Collyer’s principal, Sally Bromley said: “I was really impressed with the quality of the students’ questions and how they pressed for candidates to explain their policies fully.”
