Playden

Marion Lovell, Abingworth, New England Lane

Lovely weather for the start of the spring holiday for the children. Bright, frosty, lots of sun;what more could you want?

The Friends of Playden Church are very much looking forward to the Ghostly Encounters with Philippa Urquhart tomorrow evening in the W. I. Hall. If you had meant to book your supper and haven’t got round to it, it is worth a phone call on 22 26 15, but we are pretty full already.

Unfortunately illness has struck at the cast of Iolanthe which Ryesingers were to have presented this weekend. The performances have been cancelled.

By kind permission of the Mayor, Cllr. Shaun Rogers, the Rye and District Association of the National Trust will be holding a “Meet and Greet” event at Rye Town Hall on Saturday 23rd February from 11 am. Various displays will show the Trust’s activities through the year. There will be refreshments and a tombola stall. This open event will enable anyone interested to find out more about the support given to National Trust properties in this area. Everyone is very welcome to attend.

Many thanks to Heather Coote for the following report on the W. I. Meeting last week.

Our meeting in February was our Birthday Meeting. Shirley made a lovely cake to celebrate 95 years of Playden W. I. Our president welcomed a full house as we had guests from other institutes who were able to enjoy the cake with a cup of tea. In our President’s Newsletter we were told of a forthcoming Coffee Morning on 15th June at the Buttermarket in Rye, raising money for Hall funds. The Christmas Lunch will be on 12th December in the Hall and Joan is liasing with a caterer.

Our speaker was Mr.Bob Cooper, a woodturner, who came along with his friend Mr. Roger Hills. They brought Bob’s lathe and other tools. We were shown items turned in various types of wood, one of which was called Purple Heart, a lovely bowl in a beautiful shade of purple. This wood was from Brazil. There was also a special bowl with a pottery insert made for the Queen’s Jubilee. Bob showed us a variety of pens turned in wood and acrylic, the most unusual being turned from the central core of corn on the cob.

This was altogether a very enjoyable afternoon.
