The pizza place, best known for serving craft beers and specialty sourdough pies, had only been in Chichester for just over a year before yesterday’s shock closure.

In some ways, the writing was on the wall. Italian restaurant Wildwood, opposite Three Joes’ South Street location, closed up shop last week, and the trendy eatery was in direct competition with established giants like Pizza Express and Franco Manca.

Many commenters said as much on our Facebook page, having taken to social media to share their views on yesterday’s news: “Not surprised poor business model and why would they open a pizza restaurant when there’s pizza express two doors down and then Franca Manca on the corner,” said reader Clive Hudson.

"Hope a more successful business takes on the site. Used to love the Thai there before the pizza place.”

Referencing the failure of several restaurants in the unit over the last few years, reader Olivia Arnaudy said: “Literally the most cursed commercial let in Chichester, nothing stays there for long!”

Reader Daryll Braine-Porter said the market is to blame, writing: “Why do companies continue to open restaurants when the market is saturated? The start-up costs must be astronomical, and then 6-18 months later, they close.”

Three Joes Pizza has since removed the Chichester location from its online listings and, responding to a request for comment yesterday, told Sussex World the restaurant has closed permanently and with immediate effect, but could not offer any further information.
