Selsey mum sets up petition for pedestrian crossing on dangerous road - 'We shouldn't wait until there is an accident'

A mum from Selsey, fed up of having to navigate a dangerous road outside her house with a pram, has taken matters into her own hands.

Kristi Wallace, 28, who lives with her partner Marcus, 30 and their three-month-old son Thomas, has set up a petition in the hope authorities will agree to build a zebra crossing on Chichester Road — 'one of the main roads going into Selsey'.

"We have lived here for nearly three years and it is always really busy and difficult to cross the road," Kristi said. "Crossing the road with a pram has been worse.

"Trying to cross that road is hard work on your own, let alone with a dog, a child or a pram.

"You have to just stand and wait and then jog across the road when it's safe. Cars have to slow down for us.

"There is a bend [in the road] which makes it even more of a challenge. Very few people stick to the 30mph limit."

Kirsti said the footpath on Chichester Road leads to an alleyway which takes you into the park at the back of the Selsey Centre, local nursery, play area and dog walking area.

She added: "It is used by a range of different pedestrians such as school children, elderly people, dog walkers and mothers with prams.

"Thankfully, there haven't been any accidents but we shouldn't have to wait for once before making changes.

"I wanted to do something about it [so] I contacted West Sussex Highways. We have the support our local county councillor [Carol Purnell].

"Selsey Town Council told us a petition would be needed for it to be heard at a planning meeting. This would then be sent to West Sussex Highways to be reviewed and considered."

Kristi said the target was 250 signatures but, having already reached that total ahead of the petition's deadline on Wednesday (July 29), the aim is now 500.

She said: "I have had so many people offer support and leave comments, it's more than I expected.

"I just need to keep sharing the petition, trying to get more people on board.

"The main reason is to be able to cross the road to get to a footpath which takes you into a children's park safely. Building a zebra crossing here will keep pedestrians safe."
