Paralympic hero Sophie hails golden Barnham students

Paralympic hero and gold medal-winner Sophie Christiansen was the guest of honour when she visited a Barnham school.

Equestrian Sophie, 25, picked up three golds at last summer’s games. However, her visit to St Philip Howard Catholic High School, in Elm Grove, was not to celebrate her achievements, but those of last year’s successful GCSE and GCE students.

Sophie, who has cerebral palsy, gave a moving speech to the teenagers before presenting prizes. Winners included Samuel Theodoridi, David Simmonds, and Lucy Brookes, Catherine Hawkins, James Turner, Joshua Weston, and Sam Foster.

Head teacher David Carter said: “Sophie’s attitude, determination and desire to succeed is an example to us all.

“She has a no-nonsense, no excuses, upbeat mentality which is totally inspiring. Like we do at St Philip Howard, she sets her sights high and never gives up in aspiring to be the very best she can be.

“There were many gold-winning performances from our students in the exams over the summer and we were delighted to host Sophie, one of our country’s most successful Paralympians ever.”
