Horsham woman who launched anti-aircraft balloons during WWII marks 100th birthday

A Horsham woman who launched huge anti-aircraft balloons on the south coast during the Second World War has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Theresa Edith Wood marked the milestone at Broadbridge Park Care Home in Broadbridge Heath where she now resides.

She said: “It feels old, but a pride and joy that I lived to this age.”

Theresa was born on September 4, 1920, in Milton near Sittingbourne.

During the War she was part of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).

She was with Walter Wood DSM between 1943-2013, and they were married for 66 of those years.

Walter was a war hero in the Royal Navy earning the distinguished service medal from the King, then spent the rest of his life as a barber.

She has one son; Stuart Wood, two grandchildren; Alistair and Victoria, and four great grandchildren; Poppy, James, Isobel and Sam.
