Horsham Park has become a litter hot spot over recent weeks and many other bins around the town have been overflowing.

Christine Costin hit out: “There is no doubt that we have not seen such appalling amounts of waste accumulation from dumping and disregard for tidiness for a very long time.

“It may come out of frustration and depression with the essential messages to isolate from Covid-19. Then at the first sign of freedom people assert their right to mingle and to do exactly as they wish.

“Of course it’s wrong, it is causing pollution, public health risks and looks like total barbarism.

“There are no excuses this is callous bad behavior which needs to stop.”

Horsham District Council’s neighbourhood wardens have posted on social media about problems in Horsham Park.

They said: “Anti-social behaviour and littering are unacceptable and we are working hard to tackle this.”

The wardens have adjusted their shifts to prioritise Horsham’s parks and open spaces in the evenings

A spokesman said: “Our staff are collecting around 80 bin bags of rubbish from Horsham Park every day and are very grateful to all the volunteer litter-pickers out there who are also helping.”

Meanwhile, Horsham businesswoman PJ Alddred has launched a new Facebook Group - Keep Horsham Tidy. She posted: “If you have any ideas on how best to tackle the recent littering problems we are encountering in and around the town, please join and comment.

“Also, if you have particular hot spots in your area that get regularly trashed, report here and we can pool our resources.

“Together, we could make a difference.”
