They say that trees in the road at Maplehurst are being damaged by the lorries whose drivers are directed onto the route by their Sat Navs.

In one incident last week, residents say a 40-foot lorry knocked a 20-foot branch from an oak tree and pulled down a fibre optic cable in Newells Lane.

A witness said: “The branch landed across the road and took three men to move it to one side. Luckily no one was hurt.”

He added that the driver “had apparently not seen a width restriction, except for deliveries, sign or noticed that the road being entered was single track as he left the A281.”
