Bognor's '˜dirty' yellow paving to be relaid the same colour

Because the colour of the new paving along London Road forms an ‘integral part’ of the design of the £600,000 improvements from the railway station to the High Street, it will be replaced with the same colour, Arun said.

A council spokesperson said: “The pavement in Station Road, Bognor Regis, forms part of the overall public realm design scheme for this area that was approved by the relevant authorities and the sandy colour forms an integral part of this design.

“The council is of course disappointed that the newly-laid sandy coloured pavement was heavily stained with black marks as soon as it was laid.

“This is clearly not satisfactory, and was quickly investigated, and the contractor will be rectifying this before the end of the contract.”

A number of people have contacted the Observer about the condition of the paving, which has large oil marks, footprints and dirt all along it.

Last week Bognor’s town centre manager, Toyubur Rahman, said the reason for the marks was because it was opened too soon while it was still tacky.

He said he personally thought it should be relaid in more traditional black, a view shared by other Bognor residents.
