98 year old D-Day veteran is among Bexhill residents celebrating VE Day

Residents at the Croft in Sutherland Avenue Bexhill joined together in their communal garden on Friday to enjoy a socially distanced VE Day party and celebration on Friday May 8.

With them was Mr Ben Fuzzard who is a 98 year old veteran of the second world war. He was in the Royal Navy and he took part in the D Day landings being in charge of a landing craft.

Fellow resident Christine Hall said: “Last June he was a guest of the British Legion attending the 75th Anniversary of D day in the UK and France. He is one of the last surviving WW2 veterans and has many stories to tell as his memory is amazing.”

Christine added: “Our VE Day ‘social distancing’ garden party was a great success.

“The weather was perfect and we each took a picnic and chairs into the garden where our older neighbours shared their wartime memories and enjoyed listening to the music and songs of that time.”
