A group of 12-year-old friends from Billingshurst held a mini junior bake off competition to raise some dough for charity.

Organised by Jasmin Johnston-Jones, the fundraiser saw The Weald School pupils come together virtually on Tuesday, April 13, as they created some impressive cakes from their own homes in aid of Stand Up To Cancer.

The star bakers managed to smash their target and have so far raised £140 to help fund life-saving cancer research.

Emma Johnston, Jasmin’s mum, said: “I have to say, it was a lovely three hours of the kids away from gadgets, and really encouraging one another. There were lots of laughs. They did amazing and the standard was unbelievably high!

“The parents forgave all the kitchen mess as the cakes were all divine. The kids have enjoyed it so much they have asked to repeat the experience next year!”

The competition was judged by Carol Pearson, Wisborough Green Scouts cub leader, where Jasmin and her bake off pals Ros MacLeod, Edith Cookman and Jack Johnson were all cubs.

A slice of each baker’s cake was delivered to Carol to taste for judging.

Emma said: “We were really lucky to secure the Wisborough Green cub leader to do the judging. It seemed very applicable actually as she has been involved with encouraging the kids to do these great things.

“It was really close – Carol did a family tasting and the decision was quite divided, but Jasmin, followed really closely by Ros, just pipped the others to the post.

“Jasmin decided to share first prize as it was so close with Ros.

“They all received prizes; Edith finished on time, and Jack used the most imagination making a pug cake that was beating cancer – literally with his paws.”

Stand Up To Cancer is a fundraising campaign by Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 which aims to bring the UK together to speed up progress in life-saving cancer research.
