Pass-the-parcel over Pavilion car park damage

A MOTORIST who has paid a £500 repair bill for damage to their car by hooligans while in the De La Warr Pavilion car park says nobody will accept responsibility.

The questioner on Rother leader Cllr Carl Maynard's Ask The Leader slot on the council's website makes the point that the damage comes on top of the 200 permit to leave a car in the council-owned car park.

The questioner says in a follow-up to an earlier question: "You said we should inform the police about dangerous and anti-social behaviour in the De La Warr car park.

"We have spoken to the police and they said to speak to the council.

"We have spoken to several local councillors and the local MP to no avail.

"We spoke to the staff at the De La Warr and they said they have every right to be there!

"Well if that's the case how are we to sort out these problems if no one is taking responsibility? I have just paid nearly 500 to have bodywork repairs carried out due to damage to my car whilst it was parked in De La Warr, for which I pay 200 for a permit."

The leader said: "The council does not accept any liability for damage to vehicles or other property when permit holders or casual users park in our car parks. After all, any damage would be caused by the actions of other people using the car park and so this is outside the council's control.

"The legal conditions under which our car parking permits (tickets) are provided are clearly displayed on the permit.

"Most car insurance policies cover damage caused on private land such as car parks, domestic driveways etc, but you should check with your insurance company to be certain.

"If you witnessed who caused damage to your car then you (or your insurance company) can pursue this matter with the police."
