Pagham flood defences: Plans unveiled

The latest recommendations by the Environment Agency are to protect the vast majority of properties to at least their current standard.

However, the proposals recognise that securing the millions of pounds in funding for building and maintaining defences is a serious and pressing issue for the area.

The draft strategy will go on show in St Ninians United Reformed Church, Pagham Road, Pagham, between 1pm and 8pm on June 19. Environment Agency officials will be present.

The latest sea defence proposals from the agency concern the Pagham to East Head stretch of coastline.

The need for action has been shown by the agency's prediction that more than 2,200 houses and businesses in the low lying area could flood each year as the sea level rises.

At the same time, erosion could cause almost 1,500 properties to be lost to the sea.

James Humphrys, the agency's Solent and South Downs area manager, said: "The people who live and work in this area are faced with the very real threat of flooding and erosion.

"We believe that the draft strategy proposals can manage these risks. But central government funding is limited and there is strong competition from around the country.

"We cannot prevent all flooding and erosion. With our climate changing, the risks and the number of people affected will only increase."

He said the violent storm in March was a stark reminder of the situation.
