What's wrong with a Merry Christmas this festive season?

I HAVE just been into Worthing to do some Christmas shopping and noticed Santa Claus outside the entrance to the Guildbourne Centre.

Whilst waiting to meet my daughters on the opposite corner, I stood through several musical offerings and announcements but not once was "Christmas" mentioned.

We were wished a happy "festive season" and a Christmas carol was introduced as just a "carol".

Was Santa acting under instruction to avoid the "C" word?

If so, maybe he should have been in a different costume since Santa Claus is known to us all as "Father Christmas".

There is no mistaking what time of year this is (the coloured lights, giant tree and Santa are a big clue) so as this is still a Christian country, would non-Christians really be that surprised or offended to hear us being wished a "Happy Christmas"?

Advent has only just begun, so I'm hoping it was just thought to be a little too soon to be wishing shoppers a "Happy Christmas" and that it wasn't a deliberate snub on the second most important date in the Christian calendar.
