Take a bow, my Stagecoach hero

THIS morning (Saturday, May 12), I caught the 9.34am Pulse bus into town from Columbia Drive and, when we had gone over Durrington bridge, an elderly lady alighted at the stop just past it.

She was pushing a shopping trolley on wheels which was heavily loaded, and as she left the bus platform (lowered by the driver) she unfortunately lost her balance and we all heard her cry out as she fell.

The driver immediately went to her aid and, as her leg was bleeding profusely, told her he was ringing for an ambulance.

This poor lady, who must have been in shock after such a nasty fall, was absolutely adamant that she didn't need any help, wasn't going to stay and refused to listen to the extremely sensible driver.

Having apologised to his passengers for the unavoidable delay, this lovely man went after the lady, by now several yards away and leaving a trail of blood in her wake, and actually followed her home to make sure she received the necessary medical attention.

It transpired that she was anxious to return home without delay as she had left her husband there and he was recovering from a recent stroke, hence her determination not to be held up at all.

Several passengers caught the next Pulse when it turned up behind us, and the rest of us stayed out of loyalty to our hero!

On his return, he reassured us that the ambulancemen were not going to take no for an answer and would take care of matters.

Just as well since I understand that, apart from the shock, this lady might well have died from such blood loss if not dealt with as a matter of urgency.

On my return journey, another driver took the time and trouble to safely let a visually-impaired and very frail elderly lady off the bus as close as he could to her home.

How refreshing it was to meet two kind and caring gentlemen '“ Stagecoach, I hope you appreciate them as much as your passengers do!

Yours in gratitude to Stagecoach employees and our fantastic emergency services
