Views of Lake Grenada in Sussex

Realising a hammer price of £14,000, the work attracted international attention after being illustrated both on bellmans.co.uk and on the-saleroom.com.

François-Louis David Bocion, (30 March 1828 - 13 December 1890), was a Swiss artist and teacher. After studying art in his birthplace Lausanne, Bocion moved to Paris in 1845 to further his talent.

He is most noted for his depictions of Lake Geneva, as seen in lot 477. Bocion is also remembered for his forty year professorship at the Lausanne École Industrielle, during which he mentored both Theophile Steinlen and Eugene Grasset.

The hammer price of this exquisite example was boosted by interest from several competitive parties who were bidding both online and on the telephone, and the piece was eventually sold to an anonymous but delighted telephone bidder. Bellmans’ paintings specialist James Gadd, who both catalogued and sold the lot, commented “we are delighted to include a piece of this calibre within our monthly paintings auction.

“Bellmans yet again proves that items can achieve London-worthy prices in our provincial saleroom”.
