Town has own Highway Code

I refer to Derek Canty's letter (June 24 issue).

I was one of the motorists stationary caught in the gridlock on Birkdale when not for the first time did I witness a driver mount the grass verge – apart from being dangerous and illegal this driver was one of the motorists that caused the gridlock. Instead of pulling to one side in one of the many gaps along the road opposite driveways, it was in such a hurry it tailgated the car in front hereby not allowing space for any vehicle to pass in either direction.

As a relative newcomer to the area I am continuously amazed by local drivers – In fact I wonder whether there is a special Bexhill Highway Code that differs from the nationally accepted and legal requirement for drivers in the rest of the country.

For instance, I have noticed that :

• It seems you only need to have one head light working.

• If you do use both headlights, always keep them on full beam even on roads with street lighting and see how many oncoming drivers you can blind particularly going up the numerous hills in the area.

• When at a roundabout or junction sit there waiting till there is at least a ¼ mile gap between vehicles before you move forward.

• Indicators are unnecessary until after you have turned a corner.

• Keep indicators flashing for the rest of your journey even when not planning to turn left or right.

• Double parking is permissible in any main or side road, particularly when going around Little Common roundabout then double park outside the post office and see if the car behind you hits the back of your car.

• When going down the narrower roads do not pull in to one side when faced with an oncoming vehicle, to make it easier for both cars to pass without incident.

• Definitely do not acknowledge a thank you when another car does pull over to let you pass.

• Ensure you pull out of your drive at a good 30+ mph without checking on oncoming traffic then reduce your speed to less than 20mph.

• If you scratch a vehicle in a car park (Ravenside being the main one) do not leave your details or apologise.

But the best/worst one is without a doubt, and an accident waiting to happen:

• Cause lengthy delays through your own selfishness in not giving away and pulling over where possible to allow oncoming vehicle to pass and create total gridlock then mount the grass verge to continue on your way without due care and attention to the many pedestrians, often young mothers and toddlers walking along to collect their young children from school.
