Spike mystery solved

In answer to the question (ref: letter in last week’s Observer) regarding Spike Milligan’s headstone it was removed after his wife Shelagh died.

Shelagh is now buried alongside Spike following her death in June (2011) and funeral which was held at St Anthony’ RC Church in Rye.

The headstone was taken by Spike’s children from his first marriage presumably to have Shelagh’s name added. However no progress has yet been made and Rector Howard Cocks of Winchelsea Church does not have the family’s contact details. As it is a special grave which attracts many visitors to make a ‘pilgrimage’ to Winchelsea we hope that someone in Spike’s family will soon make contact and let us know when Spike will get his headstone back.

Cindi Cogswell, Winchelsea.
