Fuelled by the greatly complimented Chinese canapés supplied by Champion Caterers, Wisborough Green, bidders both in the room and on the internet rose to the occasion, and the sale surpassed all expectations.

The evening began with a drinks reception from 5.30pm, where guests enjoyed prosecco and nibbles served by the office staff, who brought a sense of fun in their Oriental themed gowns. Following the fun of the drinks reception, the biggest auction successes of the night were two highly sought after pieces of furniture.

Lot 2058, a 20th century Chinese hardwood altar table, realised a hammer price of £19,500, while lot 2080, a late 19th century Chinese hardwood centre table with a pierced frieze, achieved £15,500.

After intense competition both in the room and online, both pieces sold to international internet bidders, with auctioneer and Bellmans Managing Director Jonathan Pratt rewarded with applause from the impressed audience.

Jonathan commented: “I thought that there would be an item which would exceed our expectations, but I hadn’t expected it to be a piece of furniture! These results were the cherry on top of a really enjoyable evening”.

Both of these lots were from the exciting collection of the Elizabethan Manor, Grade 1 listed Stockton House, which made up most of the sale’s 260 lots.
