Proud of this town

CAN'T we put an end to this endless bickering every week in the letters pages of the Observer? Jackie Bialeska claims to speak for the people of Bexhill, but she doesn't.

There are many, many people who enjoy the new look to our town and I’m one of them. It makes me proud and I like to show it off to our friends who stay with us from the UK and from all around the world.

It’s simple. If you like the feel of the 20th century and prefer the Edwardian shelters, walk the prom from the Sailing Club to Galley Hill.

If you like living in the 21st century, walk the prom from the De la Warr Pavilion to South Cliff. Don’t deliberately go to your unfavoured end and then complain.

People vote with their feet. My wife and I regularly walk from South Cliff to Galley Hill and back. It’s noticeable that every time we do this, there are probably five times more people promenading the Next Wave end than the “Old Wave” end. It’s an unscientific survey, but check it out next time you walk the prom.

Not many seaside towns can offer a choice like this to its residents and visitors. We all have that choice. Also, how many other seaside towns can boast an outdoor gym? Some friends from the USA visited us last weekend and they were truly amazed.

Bexhill has become very progressive in recent years. I’ve lived here since I was 13 and I’m now 52 years old. For the first time I’m really proud of our lovely town.

The art, theatre, musical and comedy events at the De la Warr Pavilion are leagues above where they were 35 years ago. I should know, as I worked the spotlights in the mid- to late-seventies.
