No need to moan

How many times do we have to hear of traders’ worries on a project that is desperately needed for safety reasons and could potentially bring in a massive increase of trade just for them?

I am, of course, talking about the flood defence works in Pier Road (Gazette, October 17).

In the middle of the summer, I went to Arun District Council and sat for five minutes with a chief staff member who closely explained what is going on. From what I understand, the businesses have already agreed compensation while the work goes on, it is being done as quickly as possible out of summer trading hours and there are fines for the companies carrying out the work who don’t meet the final dates.

If the businesses in Pier Road are worried about their trade, they have been compensated for what could end up a bonus, as they still do not know what loss of figures they could suffer, if any.

The road on the corner opposite the Nelson public house was amended at their request, just to help, they have been given free parking for the time it takes to complete the work, and for their customers.

As a trader just off the town centre, we would love this sort of work to be done here, to completely smarten up the area!

Think yourself lucky, you traders in Pier Road, you are paying nothing towards this, your shop frontages will be absolutely fantastic when it is finished and attract far more visitors, and you have been offered compensation.

I’d call that a win-win situation!

Of course, some people are never happy . . .
