Mosaic celebrates Swan Walk’s 40th birthday

Swan Walk invited school children from seven Horsham primary schools to create a special birthday design for the centre’s iconic mosaic. Out of the 139 creative entries submitted Nathan Worsell, aged 8 from Northolmes Primary School was chosen as the winner.

On Friday 22nd May, Nathan and his classmates joined artists in their school hall to bring half of the winning design to life.

With guidance from the artists, the children used a variety of recycled objects including stamps, envelopes, and vinyl to create their sections.

The children of Northomes really enjoyed the workshops with one saying: “I want to do this every day of the week. I can’t wait to go into town tomorrow to show my Mum.”

Their teacher Mrs Snap said: “The project really captured the children’s imaginations, it has been lovely to be involved.”

The mosaic was completed at Swan Walk on Saturday 23rd May during a free event which welcomed all Horsham residents to participate. Throughout the day over 100 shoppers and their children participated in the event making their mark on this unique project.

Gill Buchanan, Swan Walk Centre Manager said “It was really fantastic to see so many people from the local community help us to complete this lovely piece of art. We are looking forward to all the other brilliant competitions and events we have planned this year to celebrate our birthday with Horsham.”

The piece now resides in the centre’s new community hub, a vacant unit providing a free space for local charities and organisations to host free events and fundraisers throughout the year.
