LETTER: PM’s version of Magna Carta

Not just the ‘Soul of West Sussex is under threat’ (letter last week), from the mooted sequestration of asset value from councils. It will also increase pressure on councils to raise council taxes in future.

That is because asset release is often factored into council budget projections, minimising the need for council tax rises to counter higher borrowing costs.

Magna Carta said that ‘no free man shall be stripped of his possessions’ and the PM urged recently that such principles should be re-established.

He forgot to add ‘unless you can get away with it, by using smoke and mirrors to extract the serf’s asset value, via his council’.

No doubt the PM has already issued an amended version of Magna Carta to his Ministers. Perhaps we can all have a copy.
