LETTER: Agreeing with concerns raised

I wholeheartedly agree with the concerns expressed last week about the danger and cruelty involved in horse racing.

There are horse injuries and deaths in training and races, and animals can be carted off to slaughter when they age or are otherwise surplus to requirement.

Consider the way some people will refer to a ship, plane or even a country as ‘she’, but a female horse will be ‘it’ despite the intelligence of an animal. There is still a lot of adjustment in attitude to be made.

As for the recent parliamentary debacle that Whispering Smith dealt with, where two important and well-supported animal bills were dismissed before discussion when someone on the backbenches called out ‘object’ – are we really to expect any better?

I remember the same happening to a bill to support the disabled. The animal bills were to review and increase the length of possible imprisonment for animal crime and cruelty, sentences where we lag behind Europe.

Organised crime is inflicting violent cruelty on wildlife for secret ‘sport’, and varied random acts of cruelty occur anywhere and everywhere – and are sometimes put on the internet by people with unhealthy minds.

I listened hopefully to ‘Today in Parliament’ that night, but to no avail of course.

What I really do want to know though is who scuppered the bills and for what reason – wouldn’t we all like to know?!
