Lack of forward plan

LAST Saturday I set out at about 11am to Bexhill's Ravenside centre, not only to do my weekly shop but to ensure I had sufficient for the holiday period. Like many people, the sheer volume of my purchases meant public transport was not an option.

The pavements were very slippery and despite the high percentage of elderly residents in Bexhill, the local authorities had not gritted or cleared the pathways.

This was despite the meteorological office having been forecasting severe conditions for several days. With this lack of forward planning it came as no surprise that the side roads were also untreated. They were extremely dangerous.

However, I was horrified to find that the A259 King Offa Way was also ungritted. The road was like a skating rink, and controlling a car was almost impossible.

Road conditions continued like this for the remainder of my journey. The local buses were running, as were numerous commercial vehicles together with the usual number of cars.

Despite having more than 40 years’ driving experience, much of it professionally, I felt far from safe in these conditions.

To completely abandon road gritting on what was bound to be the busiest day of the year for many motorists is nothing short of irresponsible.I wonder if those responsible would like to tell us whether they are apathetic or incompetent?
