Gilbert and Sullivan at Rye Town Council

DURING these dangerous days of December, Rye Town Council spent neither money nor effort to explore alternative ways of clearing or gritting our side-roads and pavements.

People fall, people break bones, tourists cannot believe the general sense of neglect, the lack of concern or care.

This Monday, as the snow fell outside, deep crisp and very uneven, a full meeting of that same esteemed town council voted only one item of expenditure: £285 to purchase ‘a suitable hat to fit the newly appointed Town Sergeant’ - oh yes, and new stockings were also approved for the Town Crier.

Are they running a town or a Gilbert and Sullivan opera?
