Flooding solution?

WITHOUT pre-empting protracted discussions about the floods that are hopefully going on in various Souther Water and Arun District Council offices, might I offer a possible solution in an endeavour to relieve the residents of basement flats in South Terrace from any further stress and disruption in adverse weather.

In Madeira, a sub-tropical island well known for its high rainfall in the mountains, they use levadas for moving water around to parts that get less water and for drainage.

South Terrace has a natural water outlet close by – the River Arun.

Surely the northern gutter along the terrace could be replaced by a levada – a 250mm square concrete duct with an iron grill over the top (to allow for parking and drainage) would probably suffice, to connect to a 250mm pipe to take the water under Pier Road into the Arun.

Perhaps the insurance companies could be coerced into funding this type of project.
