Christ’s Hospital Band at Lord’s

The Christ’s Hospital School Band has become a regular feature at Lord’s providing entertainment for the crowd during a day of international test cricket. This year was no exception making its 20th appearance on June 14 at the official home of cricket during the lunch interval for the third day of the Test Match against Sri Lanka.

The 120 members of the Band were ably led by Band Captain, Freddy Wordsworth aged 18 who plays the trumpet; Senior Drummer, James Hogg and Senior Drum Majors Tom Higginson and Henry Carter. Dressed in their traditional Tudor uniform, they provided a wonderful spectacle for the crowd.

The Band Master, Terry Whittingham, joined Christ’s Hospital in 1999 having formerly been Band Master of the Grenadier Guards and Queen’s Own Highlanders.

Band member Charlotte Scarr, Grecian (Upper Sixth Former) said: “It was a surreal experience walking onto the same ground just trodden by the English and Sri Lankan cricketers and also a tearful experience for me being the last time I would be playing at Lord’s with the Christ’s Hospital band.”

A member of the MCC complimented the Band on their “splendid music, turn-out, marching and dexterity of the drum majors”. He went on to say: “It is always a pleasurable experience at the lunch interval at Lord’s and long may it continue.”

Christ’s Hospital enjoys a long tradition of musical excellence with unrivalled facilities. At least 600 of the School’s 870 pupils learn an instrument and musical groups have the opportunity to perform both in the UK and abroad.
