LETTER: Parking views are disregarded

Although the comment made by one councillor '˜parking cheaper than chips' is not the point for the majority of the reasons why the rural parking charges are being brought in.

Does the council not have the forethought to see the knock-on effects of residents and/or visitors not parking in car parks serving smaller villages like Pulborough and Henfield to name but two. The residents will just drive past and go and park for free in the local large superstore car parks and take their trade.

Why can’t we support our local businesses rather than bringing on financial burden with lower turnover. We will end up with ghost villages with nothing but empty retail units.

It will also create congestion for those who choose to use the rural village shops as parking in side roads and park illegally will increase.

The council will not only have to expend capital on ticketing machines but also parking wardens for all of the car parks and for those who will park on the double yellow lines in the main streets.

Not only do we have large housing developments creating more traffic in the area, no provision is being made by the council for extra parking for this increase in motor vehicles. Also where the car parks are situated for the shops in the villages, there does not appear to be any space to be able to allocate for parking.

The council state that the upkeep of the car parks is considerable, for resurfacing and maintenance and that the charges will go towards that.

In the 12 or so years I have lived here, and used the rural car parks, I cannot think of one that has been resurfaced and not even seen a warden checking the blue ticket parking badges.

So now the council will have added administration costs, printing costs for passes, installation costs and maintenance of the parking machines and the upkeep of the structure of the car parks.

Added to that the charges may start ‘cheap as chips’ as per brown bin collections, but each year we will no doubt see these charges increase.
