Mr Portillo entertained with an interesting and witty talk, followed by answering some searching questions, as well as ceaselessly signing books and shaking hands before and afterwards.

But could he not have been introduced with at least a voice-over; “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Michael Portillo!”

And, oh!, how drab the stage looked with those drapes, and a ghastly cloth covering the table with the water jug!

Could a floral display not have been added, to match Mr Portillo’s colourful attire?
