Spending cuts: are we set for a local Coalition?

IT'S very ironic that we are wishing our readers a merry Christmas on the front page while carrying Rother's reaction to swingeing public service cuts from the government coupled with the misery that lack of grit on icy roads can cause.

We all know 2011 is going to be an extremely tough year, and this week Bexhill’s councillors set out just how rotten the funding situation is, while still being unsure of what services will be affected and how.

This prospect is potentially so daunting that both Conservatives and Lib Dems have condemned the Coalition government - the national structure councillors of both parties helped put there in the first place.

Yet the leaders of both parties have pledged to work together to “see Rother right” in the words of Lib Dem leader Sue Prochak.

Locally the Tories and the Lib Dems have traditionally been at loggerheads, so it just goes to show how a big threat or crisis can bring causes together.

Again it’s ironic that while the Coalition nationally is looking rather shaky, its mirror at the Town Hall is starting to show some cohesion.
