Observer Comment: Independents' election should provoke debate

WHILE overall control of Rother District Council still remains in Conservative hands, all four Independent candidates standing in Bexhill succeeded in gaining a seat in their respective wards.

These candidates gained quite a hefty share of the vote, reflecting strong local views that the council has not listened to the electorate over schemes such as Next Wave.

Even though the general make-up of Rother is still Tory blue, the election of these Independents should provoke some lively debate in the council chamber - particularly on the upcoming subject of the regeneration of the town centre.
